Cold weather reed tips

Hi Everyone!

This post is mainly for those of you in colder winter climates. It is that time of year when reeds can be affected by the cold, dry air. Here are a few things to try that may help keep things more consistent:

  • use warm water when possible to soak reeds – the warm water absorbs a bit quicker than cold and can help keep the moisture in the reeds longer
  • keep a small humidifier or orange peels in a sealed bag with your reeds – below is an image of one option available from Forrests Music – there are also humidity controlled reed cases and disposable humidity packs available from a variety of sources – it takes some experimentation to find the right balance, too much humidity will make the reeds appear “swollen” with a large opening, too little humidity will make the reeds appear to have no opening at all, or even make the sides of the reed pull apart
  • use a humidifier in your music room – to keep the overall humidity of the air consistent where you practice
  • reeds may be harder to play at this time of year, sometimes an older reed that seemed worn out can work again due to the stiffening of the cane

Please keep in touch if any of the reeds you purchase from me arrive in a compromised state. Sometimes during the shipping process and going through various climates, the reeds can change from the condition they were when I sent them. I am always willing to work with you on replacing reeds that are unplayable.

All best wishes and happy practicing! -Alyssa
